Compulsive Gambler’s Guilt Affects Their Gambling Addiction Recovery

13 Nov

When a compulsive gambler is in recovery, feeling guilty is one of the toughest areas to resolve for some people. When a gambler finally makes the conscious decision to stop gambling, reality sets in for the first time in a long time. When they take finally take stock in themselves they see all the damage they caused. Some people stop right before it’s too late and they have a few assets left. Then the compulsive gambler thinks they’re in control and once again go back to gambling. The next time the destruction is twice as worse. The feelings of guilt increase until they finally are willing to face they have a gambling problem.

Through various discussions with compulsive gamblers, I found a majority felt guilty and ashamed about the following:

* Feeling guilty you lied to your family and friends

* Feeling ashamed that your family and friends know you have a problem gambling

* Feeling guilty that friends and family may never trust you again

* Feeling guilty and ashamed knowing how much money you lost that could have been better spent.

* Feeling guilty you didn’t spend enough time with your children.

* Feeling guilty about your self destructive behavior

* Feeling guilty you didn’t go to relatives and friends events (birthdays, graduations etc.)

In time people will forgive the compulsive gambler, but can the compulsive gambler forgive them selves?

Friends and family will come around if the compulsive gambler keeps their word from now on. Once the gambler tells you they stop gambling, they must stick to it. If not they will lose credibility. Trust is very important both for the compulsive gambler and for the family and friends. People have to learn to trust compulsive gamblers all over again. In time they will if the compulsive gambler is willing to stop gambling.

Even though a compulsive gambler made numerous mistakes, they can recover and they can move forward. It’s human nature to learn from your mistakes. No one is going to give the compulsive gambler the death penalty for gambling. A lot of gamblers feel this way when their world comes crumbling down.

Take the time to improve your quality of life and the compulsive gambler’s feelings of guilt will diminish over time.

Mr. Howard Keith has an extensive background in dealing with compulsive gamblers, relatives and friends of gamblers and teenage gamblers. Mr. Keith believes there are many alternatives to aid in the recovery of a gambling addiction verses a twelve step program. A large percentage of his emails were from compulsive gamblers looking for an alternative to Gamblers Anonymous and twelve step programs. Gamblers Anonymous also helps a significant number of people each year but there is a large percentage that they are unable to reach.

Online Casino Gambling – How Do Online Gamblers Finance Their Play?

24 Aug

To be able to gamble for real money at online casinos, an online gambler must back up his play with real cash, and the first thing he does is to make a real cash deposit to his chosen online casino. An online gambler has many options in doing this and each has its own pros and cons. The variables to consider are speed, cost, safety, local laws, and reliability, among others. The traditional means used before and are still being used today are credit/debit cards, personal check, and bank wire.

Credit/Debit Cards Credit/debit cards used to be the most popular method owing to its ease of use, dependability, cost, and speed, but after the United States passed the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act), the law that prohibits bank to process transactions emanating from gambling activities, its popularity dwindles. Credit card companies nowadays disallow US citizens to use the cards for cash deposits to gambling sites in compliance with the Law. As a consequence, US players are finding that deposit attempts are rejected even if funds are available. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of online casinos that accept credit cards.

Personal Check A good number of online casinos today still accept personal check as a deposit option, and those who do have to bear the limitations owing to its nature. For one, this deposit method is slow as it would usually take a number of days for funds to clear. Besides, the use of personal check depends to some extend on the player’s geographic location as there are places unreachable by the service.

Bank Wire Most casinos accept bank wire as a deposit method owing to its safety and reliability. Its use however is limited to the geographical locations of both players and casinos as state laws play a heavy influence on its use. In some areas, like the United States, players may find banks refusing to provide this service. Besides it would take some times before the fund becomes available for play. Banks also charge service fees that make it uneconomical in small value transactions.

Electronic Payments Solutions Depositing money at online casinos even became easier and better with the introduction of e-wallet solutions and other forms of electronic payments. These payments system is funded via a number of methods such as bank wire or credit card. In this system, a player can move funds in and out of the on-line account, and so deposits to casinos can be made, and funds from the casino can also be returned to the account. A number of these e-wallet providers have become popular like NetTeller, Click2Pay, EcoCard, and UseMyWallet, to name a few.

With the advent of UIGEA, all forms of deposits to gambling sites became difficult to use, particularly for US and Canadian players. Nevertheless, there are still e-wallet providers like UseMyWallet to name one, that accept US players. In response to UIGEA, online casinos have become creative in looking for channels of online payments. A gambler may discuss with an online casino regarding depositing options before opening an account with them. Casinos want their customers to be happy and as such will be more than willing to discuss the best method acceptable to the players.

Famous Gamblers Past and Present

28 May

There have been many casino players throughout history who became famous as a result of gambling. Although the following persons did not necessarily achieve fame through gambling, they did nevertheless attract a significant degree public attention as a result of their gambling activities.

One of the first famous gamblers in the world was John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich. He led a scandalous private life and was addicted to gambling. In 1762, he sat for over 24 hours at a gaming table in his home, refusing to attend meals. In desperation, a servant offered the Earl a piece of salted beef as food; the Earl suggested that the beef be encased between two slices of bread so that he could eat it in his hand at the table. This is where the sandwich got its name.

One of the West’s most famous gamblers was “Doc” Holliday, who maintained a fierce reputation as a hard drinker, tough fighter and ruthless killer. He is chiefly remembered for fighting alongside Wyatt Earp at the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

“Wild Bill” Hickok was another American legend, renowned throughout the world for the tall tales surrounding his violent life. He’s chiefly remembered for taming two of the most lawless towns in Kansas. Unfortunately, Hickok made many enemies and his day of judgment came at a poker table. He was shot in the back of the head by an assassin and died clutching a pair of aces and a pair of eights; ever since, this particular hand has been known as the ‘Dead Man’s’ hand for obvious reasons!

Benny Binion was born in 1904 and lived his life as a bootlegger and conman. At the age of 43, he gave up his life of crime and moved to Las Vegas, where he later opened his own casino. Binion was the gambler’s gambler, and in the 1970s he bought and marketed the World Series of Poker tournament, which has grown over time to be the biggest in the world.

Magazine owner Kerry Packer made his name through his family’s media empire, which owns 60% of all magazines in Australia. Packer became known as a high-stakes gambler when he won $26 million playing blackjack at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. However, Packer has not always been successful; he lost $16.5 million at the Crockfords casino in London, although this barely dented his $8 billion fortune.

The World Series of Poker tournament has created many famous gamblers of today. One such example is Johnny Chan, nicknamed “The Great Wall of China” after his amazing success winning the World Championships in 1987 and 1988 consecutively. He’s played in all the major games of the last two decades and is also known as a genuinely nice guy.

Although gambling is primarily a recreational activity, many people have approached it with a different mindset, and as a result, made and lost vast fortunes with it, while becoming famous along the way.
